Indexing starts in 2-4 weeks. Impressions for your real target keywords usually start in weeks 6-10. Clicks and any ranking worth tracking take 3-6 months. Zero clicks with irrelevant impressions in month one is normal, not a failure.
This is our own Search Console data, three weeks after finishing a full technical SEO pass on this site: 56 impressions, 0 clicks, average position 3.3. On paper, position 3.3 looks like a win. The actual queries were "power supply failure," "private power network," and "powernet it support sydney" — none of them anything a warehouse software company can help with. Zero clicks on those impressions makes complete sense, and it's not a sign anything is broken.
What's actually happening in month one
A newly verified site doesn't get judged on its content immediately. Google indexes the pages first, then gradually works out what each page is actually about by re-crawling and comparing it against everything else it knows. In the gap between "indexed" and "understood," it sometimes shows a new site for queries that loosely match fragments of the business name — in our case, "Power" and "Support" matched against completely unrelated searches. This is a known, temporary phase, not a targeting error.
3 things to actually check instead of panicking
- Track the query list weekly, not the click count. The signal that matters is whether your real target keywords (e.g. "warehouse management system Melbourne") start appearing in the query list — not whether clicks exist yet.
- Confirm indexing status, not rankings. In Search Console's Indexing report, watch the "indexed" count climb week over week. A flat or falling count after a sitemap resubmission is the actual red flag — irrelevant impressions are not.
- Separate technical readiness from topical authority. Technical SEO (titles, schema, sitemap) can be finished in days. Google associating your site with a topic strongly enough to rank for it takes months and is helped by backlinks, reviews, and consistent content — not further code changes.
| Timeframe | What's Normal | What's a Red Flag |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-4 | Low impressions, irrelevant queries, 0 clicks | Indexed count stuck at 0 after 2+ weeks |
| Weeks 6-10 | Target keywords start appearing in query list, still few clicks | Zero target keywords in query list at all |
| Months 3-6 | First real clicks, position improving for target terms | No movement at all with zero backlinks or reviews added |
If the technical foundation is solid (see our pricing and setup guides for what that involves) and target keywords still haven't appeared by week 10, the next lever isn't more code — it's backlinks, reviews, and consistent content. Frequently Asked Questions
How long does SEO take to show results in Australia?
A newly verified site typically shows its first indexed pages within 2-4 weeks. Impressions for the actual target keywords (not just brand-name fragments) usually start appearing in weeks 6-10. Clicks and any ranking movement worth tracking take 3-6 months, longer for competitive terms.
Why is my new site getting impressions but zero clicks?
In the first few weeks, Google often shows a new site for queries that only partially match — usually fragments of the business name — before it has fully associated the site's content with its actual topic. Zero clicks on irrelevant impressions is expected and not a sign of a technical problem.
